MAUNDY THURSDAY

                                               Introduction before the Mass

We are in the Holy Week. The week during which Our Lord Jesus Christ carried out his most momentous deeds to save us. Today we begin the Sacred Tridum. Thursday, Friday and Saturday are the three sacred days of this week and from ancient times they have been called “The Holy Three Days.” Today is Holy Thursday and this day is set apart to remember what Jesus did and taught during his last meal on earth. It was no ordinary meal; it was the meal of Passover which was sacred to the Jews. Jesus gave it a new and fuller meaning and in doing so gave us three important Christian mysteries. We call this meal the Last Supper of Jesus during which he instituted the Holy Eucharist for all of us so that each time we celebrate the Eucharist we remember Jesus’ great love and sacrifice for us. With the institution of the Holy Eucharist he also instituted the ministerial priesthood for the service of the people. It was during this meal that Jesus performed that great act of love and service by washing his disciple’s feet and thus inviting us to do the same. Holy Thursday has therefore been rightly called the Day of Love because it manifests to us Jesus’ command “to love one another”.

Commentary before the Second Reading 1Cor.11:23-26

Today’s second reading is taken from the first letter of St. Paul to the Corinthians. In this reading St. Paul takes us back once again to the Last Supper which Jesus had with his disciples, where he instituted the Eucharist. It is a reminder once again of the great sacrifice of Jesus in order to save us. It is also a reminder for us that the Eucharist is the center of our Christian worship.

Commentary before the washing of the feet

Now we shall witness the rite of the washing of the feet. This is a rite specifically set aside for the Holy Thursday, when Jesus as we heard in the gospel, washed the feet of his disciples. Archbishop Vincent will wash the feet of the twelve appointed persons, thus re-enacting the scene from the last Supper. Jesus during his lifetime emphasized that one should always love his neighbour. With the act of washing his disciples’ feet, he brings home the same message. By doing so he poses a greater challenge to us, namely, that we need to love and serve just as he did.

Commentary after the Communion

Today’s Eucharistic celebration has no formal ending. It has no final blessing or dismissal. The Holy Mass concludes with the prayer after Communion. This is to commemorate Jesus’ prayer and agony in the garden of Gethsemane soon after the Last Supper. We also do likewise. After the Communion Prayer Fr.. …… will incense the Blessed Sacrament and thereafter in procession we go to the Altar of Repose to continue our Midnight Vigil with the Lord. After incensing the Blessed Sacrament at the Altar of Repose and closing the Tabernacle of Repose, Fr…………. comes back to the Main Altar and strips it in silence with utmost Respect and dignity. The Stripping symbolizes Jesus’ own stripping of His dignity in the scourging and crucifixion. From today till Saturday night we do not celebrate the Mass. This is because all that takes place from this evening till the Easter celebration is considered as part of one continuous celebration.
