PALM SUNDAY / PASSION SUNDAY

(Commentary and Prayers of the Faithful)

Today we enter into the most important week of our life, a week which saved us from damnation. The Holy Week signifies the ever flowing love and mercy of God the Father and Mother for each one of us through his Son Jesus. His passion and death take us all close to the bosom of the Father. This is the week when our Lord Jesus Christ carried out his most momentous deeds to save us.  Today is the day when Jesus entered Jerusalem triumphantly as King and Lord. We call this day as Palm Sunday as well as Passion Sunday. Palms represent the victory and triumph of Christ while Passion reminds us of the gory death awaiting him at Calvary. While the victorious entry reminds us of the Kingly glory of the Son of God, the Passion Reading urges us to partake in the monumental suffering and death of our Saviour. That is why today’s celebration is a blend of rejoicing and mourning. When Jesus entered Jerusalem, as a mark of recognition of his kingship, people of Jerusalem spread theirs cloaks and palm branches on the road and sang “Hosanna to the Son of David.” To commemorate this great event we too carry palms in our hands, singing aloud “Hosanna to the Son of David, our King and Lord and enter the church, the symbol of New Jerusalem with Jesus Christ our King.

Now I request all of you to gather at the entrance of the church to begin the Palm Sunday celebration and join in the blessing of Palms. Soon after the Gospel narration of Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem, we enter the church in procession, singing aloud the praises of our King with the choir. The order of the procession is: Lectors, Altar Servers, Priests and people of God with Palms in their hands. Let us walk with the Lord to partake in his thanksgiving sacrifice and meditate upon his passion and death devotedly.

Dear friends, a kindly reminder to all of you that it is our custom to carry the Palm branches to our homes and place them on the altar or near the sacred photos. They are blessed objects; please keep them at a respectful place. If possible please return them to the church one week before the next Ash Wednesday. Kindly switch off your mobile phones and worthily participate in the Sacred mystery of the Holy Eucharist.

Second Reading Phil 2:6-11 (Hindi)

The second reading from the letter of St. Paul to Philippines 2:6-11 highlights the humility of Jesus Christ and emphasizes the importance of imitating His example. Overall, this passage emphasizes the importance of humility and obedience in the Christian life and highlights Jesus' ultimate example of these qualities. It encourages believers to imitate Jesus' example and submit to His authority, recognizing that He is Lord of all.

Gospel Mt 26: 14-27:66(Hindi)

Today’s Gospel is taken from Matthew which recounts the events leading up to Jesus' crucifixion and his death on the cross. We see the brutal nature of Jesus' crucifixion and the rejection he faced from the crowds. Despite this, Jesus willingly submitted to death on the cross, knowing that it was necessary for the salvation of humanity. The tearing of the veil in the temple symbolizes that through his death, Jesus made a way for us to approach God directly, without the need for a mediator or sacrifice

Palm Sunday  (Prayers of the Faithful)

Celebrant: My dear brothers and sisters, as we begin the Holy Week, with the triumphant entry of Jesus to Jerusalem, let us pray to God our Loving Father and Mother, to give us the courage to walk the Way of the Cross with Christ and express our needs and petitions with a sincere and humble heart.

Response: Jesus our King, listen to our prayer

1.     Jesus our King, we pray for our Pope, Bishops, Priests and Religious. May they have a deeper and personal experience of your Passion, Death and Resurrection and thus become true signs and bearers of your everlasting love for the human race. For this we pray to you, O Lord.

2.     We pray for ourselves that we may recognize the presence of our Lord Jesus in our neighbours, the poor and the needy, and go out of our way to help them. With your grace may we become instruments and agents of our Loving God. For this we pray to you, O Lord.

3.     We pray for those who are condemned unjustly. Jesus, let your condemnation by the Jews, be an inspiration and source of strength for them and for all of us. Lord help us not to unjustly condemn or accuse others. For this we pray to you, O Lord.

4.     Lord Jesus, you forgave our sins by dying on the cross for our salvation. Touch the hearts of many who still live in the bondage of sin. May they experience your love and forgiveness to rise from their sinful ways and experience your salvation. For this we pray to you, O Lord.

5.     Jesus our King and master, we pray for all of us, the parish community of Immaculate Conception Church. Fill us with your Spirit to accept and hail you as our King in moments of difficulties and darkness thus keeping our hope and trust in you. For this we pray to you, O Lord.

Celebrant: God our King of Love and Compassion, hear the prayers of your beloved children gathered here and grant us today what we ask of you in faith. Take us with you to Jerusalem that we may worthily partake in your passion. We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord and King.          Amen
